How Can I Stop an Online Stalker?
Maybe you’re one of the unfortunate people who have been stalked online or maybe you were stalked in person, either way, anyone who has had someone breathing down their neck and constantly needing to your every move asks the same question, how can I stop an online stalker? The internet has many benefits and technology has given is the ability to accomplish an incredible amount of things. On the other hand, like everything that the world has to offer, there are always people who misuse the technology. This includes a lot of things, but the focus here is on the dreaded online stalker. It is the creepiest feeling when someone tracks you online and want to know everything you’re doing, it gets worse when they want you to know that they are obsessed with you and your life.
When stalking is mentioned to some people, they comment that it must be very flattering to have an online hall monitor. Anyone who has ever had the experience will tell you that it is far from flattering. Stalkers have no interest in flattering their victims; they only do it for their own strange, personal reasons. Mostly it has to feel superior to the person they stalk, to gain a false feeling of control over that person. Stalking someone online gives the stalker a feeling of imaginary power or control that they simply do not have and never did have. This “I can see you but you can’t see me” mentality is not only false and dangerous but it can often be opposed easily. There are many steps that need to be taken, staring with an internet search of your own name and family member names. Once you have an idea of what is posted online about you can take decisive steps.
The next thing many people do to deter online stalkers is get their personal information removed from the internet. You can try doing this yourself or you can look into an internet removal company. These companies remove your name from the internet; they can also remove your address from the internet. Search removal is helpful for anyone who does not want his or her information online, but it is especially beneficial to those being stalked by anyone. In addition to using an internet removal company, you can stop posting private information about yourself online. Stop posting pictures of your children and other information that should be shared privately with your family and close friends. By doing this, you are keeping them protected from people who scan the web for people to stalk. Block anyone who seems “off” or you have any ill feelings about. Don’t hesitate, and don’t worry about your follower numbers, just block them. Another thing you can do is to let everyone know you are being stalked. Ask them to let you know if anyone has gone out of their way to talk to them about you. Ask them not to share your personal information with anyone without asking you first. Most importantly, set your social media accounts to private, or don’t engage in social media at all, if possible. If you use if for business, hire someone to post for you. Most importantly, stay safe. Don’t take stalking lightly, there is almost always malicious intent behind a stalkers motives, and that’s no joke.
